Our Community Impact:

Established in 2012, Building Better Lives (BBL) is an initiative of Franklin County Family and Children First Council. Our goal is to build resilient, equitable communities through professional development focused on understanding and addressing the impact of toxic stress on individuals' brains and behavior.

By applying trauma-informed, brain-based methods, BBL helps professionals recognize how experiences affect cognitive, emotional, and physical responses. This approach emphasizes the importance of creating safe, supportive environments that promote healing and growth, while also fostering empathy, connection, and resilience.

BBL works to foster enhanced communication and practices that support well-being. Ultimately, we help our stakeholders build resilience, reduce re-traumatization, and improve individual outcomes in diverse settings. These settings include schools, out-of-school-time programs, social service agencies, first responder groups, health care settings and more.

BBL’s programs are grounded in neuroscience and evidence-based understandings of how early experiences, particularly traumatic ones, impact the development of the brain, behavior, mental health and well-being.

BBL relies on foundational research and frameworks including the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study (Felitti and Anda, 1998) and the work of Bruce D. Perry, MD, PhD, a leading expert in child psychiatry, neuroscience, and early childhood trauma in relation to brain development.

Additionally, we utilize the work of Zaretta Hammond in linking the brain science of stress and regulation with the implementation of Culturally Responsive Practices to support diverse learners.
